The Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire was honoured to attend the official opening of the newly refurbished Cranfield Joint Cadet Centre, a major enhancement providing modern, shared training space for both Air and Army Cadets in Bedfordshire.
The extended and fully updated centre will be home to the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Army Cadet Force’s Cranfield Detachment and 207 Squadron of the Air Training Corps, offering a safe, modern environment where cadets can train, learn and socialise together.
Despite inclement weather on the day, proud cadets lined the parade square to welcome guests, including detachment leaders and senior officers from both Army and Air Cadet organisations. The Lord-Lieutenant inspected the parade and enjoyed a performance from the joint cadet band before unveiling a commemorative plaque to mark the centre’s formal opening.
The £500,000 investment in the facility was made possible through the Ministry of Defence’s Reserve Estate Optimisation programme, ensuring that the local cadet community has access to high-quality training spaces for years to come.
During the event, cadets demonstrated a range of activities — from fieldcraft and signals to flight simulation and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skills — reflecting the breadth of opportunities available through the cadet experience.
The Bedfordshire Lieutenancy warmly congratulates all involved in delivering this significant project and celebrates the contribution of cadet forces to young people across the county.
