A special moment in Biggleswade’s long and proud history was marked today with the unveiling of reproductions of the town’s historic Charter Market certificates.
The Mayor of Biggleswade, Jonathan Woodhead, and Deputy Lieutenant Ruth Lloyd were delighted to officially reveal the reproductions, which commemorate the granting of Biggleswade’s right to hold a market in 1227.
The original status was granted by King Henry III, following an earlier confirmation by King John. Over the centuries, the market has evolved from early weekly fairs into the Charter Market that remains a central and much-loved part of Biggleswade’s town life today.
Town Councillors were also present at the unveiling, joining the Mayor and Deputy Lieutenant despite cold and wet weather, underlining the importance of the occasion and the town’s strong connection to its heritage.
Looking ahead, 2027 will mark the 800th anniversary of Biggleswade’s Charter Market, a truly significant milestone. Biggleswade Town Council will be marking the occasion with a programme of events across the town, with further details to be announced in due course.
